The Entire Canal by Motorhome
Explore the Göta Canal with Your Motorhome – Stay Right by the Water!
How amazing does it sound to park your motorhome right next to the Göta Canal and enjoy the view and peaceful canal atmosphere from front row seats? That’s exactly what you can do at our motorhome stopovers (ställplatser) along the canal! Most of our sites can be booked in advance, making it easy to plan and tailor your road trip to suit your preferences.
Even though the canal is the same all the way through, each stopover has its own charm and unique environment to discover. We’ve put together a suggested itinerary for anyone who wants to explore the full stretch of the Göta Canal. How many nights you stay at each place is entirely up to you. And hey, don’t forget to add an exciting experience or two when booking your nights!
Ställplats Söderköping
Right on the edge of the medieval town and summer gem Söderköping, you’ll find this canal-side stopover. There is no electricity at the site, but guests have access to the service building by the harbor. Take the opportunity to enjoy a boat tour to Mem or the archipelago aboard M/S Athene. If you have bikes with you, we strongly recommend a ride to Jolla’s Café in Vännerberga for a truly exceptional treat. Another lovely outing is a bike or walk to Kanalmagasinet in Mem for a coffee or dinner and a chance to see where the canal starts (or ends, depending on how you look at it)
Malfors
In the “chocolate town” of Ljungsbro, you’ll find Malfors stopover, set in a lush green area with 14 pitches including electricity. On site, there’s a café/restaurant open during the summer months, and a service building with toilets, showers, and laundry.
Malfors is a great choice if you want to be close to the town centre with grocery stores, a pharmacy, casual dining and of course, Cloetta’s candy outlet! The site is located right by the canal and towpath, perfect for cycling trips. Why not ride to Berg’s Locks or even farther to Borensberg? From the Berg harbor, the M/S Wasa Lejon offers daily canal cruises.
Motala verkstad
At Motala Verkstad, you’ll truly feel the wings of history! This was once the cradle of Swedish engineering, and today it’s a cultural district. The stopover is heritage-listed, meaning the buildings are preserved and the area is enclosed by a traditional fence, just like it’s always been.
Nearby, you’ll find a newly renovated service house and Café Mallboden, perfect for waffles while watching the boats go by. The site also hosts the Göta Canal exhibition “From Vision to Reality”, which is included in your stay. Motala guest harbor, with restaurants and cafés, is just a walk or bike ride along the canal.
Forsvik
On the other side of Lake Vättern lies the magical and historic Forsvik stopover. Here, your motorhome parks right by the canal inlet—front row seats again! If you’re hungry, Forsvik’s Café & Mat is right in the center of town. Don’t miss a visit to the lovely 5 Knop canal shop for souvenirs, and a well-stocked 24/7 store on the opposite side of the canal. History buffs should make time for Forsvik’s Ironworks (Forsviks bruk) a must-visit!
Vassbacken
Vassbacken Camping is an oasis on the West Götaland countryside. Both motorhomes and caravans are welcome to park right by the Göta Canal. This green, tranquil site offers a relaxing taste of Swedish summer. You’ll also find Vassbackens restaurant on site, serving lunch, dinner, and fika. During high season, they host various events too!
Norrqvarn
Our brand-new stopover at Norrqvarn’s lock area offers a canal-close stay in a lovely environment. There's a restaurant on-site, and a mini canal for kids to play in!
Lyrestad
Looking for a charming, nature-close place to stay? Lyrestad’s stopover offers peace, comfort, and a stunning canal view just a stone’s throw from the water. Enjoy coffee in the sun, watch the boats pass by, or take a relaxing bike ride along the canal.
Sjötorp Södra
Right in the heart of Sjötorp, this canal-side stopover offers walking distance to restaurants, grocery stores, cafés, and the Göta Canal Museum. Be sure to try the fish and chips at Perssons i backen or a fika at Café Baltzar!
Sjötorp Norra
This stopover is also within walking distance to everything Sjötorp has to offer. With close access to both the canal and Lake Vänern, this is a natural stop along your Göta Canal journey.
