Day 1

Hooray – today is the first day of your road trip! Your destination for the evening is Norrqvarn Hotell, but before that we recommend a visit to Sjötorp by Lake Vänern – the beginning (or the end, depending on how you see it!) of the Göta kanal.

Tips in Sjötorp:

• Enjoy lunch at Perssons i Backen – fish and chips straight from Lake Vänern
• Rent a bike at Sjötorps cykeluthyrning and experience the canal from the easy-to-cycle towpath
• Have coffee at Café Baltzar – the Canal Museum is located one floor up and is well worth a visit
• Stop by Sjöboden and bring home something lovely

Once you arrive at Norrqvarn, check in to your chosen accommodation – you can stay in anything from a giant toadstool to a classic double room (you choose your option in the next step). Dinner can be enjoyed in the hotel restaurant, and if you’re travelling with children, they’ll surely love spending time in the mini canal.

Day 2

After a good breakfast, today’s destination is Karlsborg and Hotell Rödesund – but there’s plenty to experience along the way!

Today’s tips:

• Enjoy coffee at Hajstorps Slusscafé – perhaps the most canal-close café you’ll ever find! Nearby you’ll also find the local artisans of “Hantverkarna kring kanalen.”
• Have lunch at Vassbackens Café och Restaurang – here you can also play mini golf, rent SUPs or kayaks, and visit the canal’s only small beach
• Stop at peaceful Tåtorp, one of the canal’s quietest oases. In July, you can visit the organic summer café at Tåtorps vandrarhem

Once in Karlsborg, there’s plenty to discover! Stroll along the canal harbour or explore the fascinating Karlsborgs fästning.

For dinner, you’ll find many restaurants in town – but the hotel bistro is something truly special.

Day 3

Today you continue towards Östergötland and check in at Sörby Glamping – a wonderfully cosy setting with grill facilities and a kitchen for preparing a festive dinner (don’t forget to bring your ingredients!). Breakfast can be added in the next step.

Today’s tips:

• If the weather allows, stop at Varamon – the largest inland beach in the Nordic region
• Enjoy a delicious waffle at Mallbodens Café in Gamla Motala Verkstad
• Watch boats navigate the impressive Borenshults slusstrappa
• Have lunch at historic Göta Hotell, featured in the very first Göta Canal film
• Enjoy coffee at Glasbrukets Café – the final stretch runs along the towpath, as close to the canal as you can get
• Visit Brunneby Musteri and pick up treats for dinner
• Take an evening walk along the canal in Sörby – if you’re lucky, one of the large cruise ships might pass by!

Day 4

Enjoy a relaxed morning at Sörby before heading to the idyllic medieval town of Söderköping.

Later on you'll check in at the historic Söderköpings Brunn. The town offers plenty of restaurants – you’re sure to find the perfect spot for dinner.

Tips along the way:

• Stop at Cloetta Outlet in the chocolate town of Ljungsbro
• Enjoy ice cream at Malfors Café
• Make a small detour to Boställets Vedugnsbageri
• Visit Bergs slussar and watch boats pass through the famous Carl Johans slusstrappa
• Enjoy a Swedish Fika at Jolla in Vänneberga

Day 5

Ahoy! Today you board M/S Athene for a lock cruise to Mem and back.

Departure Söderköping: 11:00

Return Söderköping: 14:15
