Technical facts: The upper lock at Mariehov is a single lock, operated with hydraulics. It has a rise of 2.6 metres. A waiting jetty is found between the upper and lower locks at Mariehov.In November 1937, an unusual discovery was made here at the Mariehov lock, namely a Chinese mitten crab. This East Asian crustacean is rare and is believed to have spread to Europe aboard merchant ships. The lock keeper who found the creature handed it over to Principal Hultén in Söderköping, who then forwarded it to Professor Hanström in Lund. What then happened with the rare crab remains a mystery. The lock keeper’s house which stands here today is a brick one, dating from 1914.
