Undocking Motala

This event marks the start of a new boating season and brings together both visitors and locals to witness the boats being released back into the canal after winter storage.

The dry dock in Motala, located in the historic Old Motala Workshop Area, has been used for winter storage and maintenance of ships since it was completed in 1815. During the winter months, the boats stand on supports in the dock to protect them from the elements and to enable necessary repairs and maintenance work.

The process begins early in the morning at 08:00 with the supports that hold the boats in the dock being removed. Then the filling of water begins, which gradually raises the water level in the dock. When the dock is full of water, the boats can be carefully maneuvered out into the canal, ready for a new season on the Göta Canal.
