The cradle of Swedish industry

Motala

In 1822, the count and admiral Baltzar von Platen established a mechanical workshop in Motala, which is considered to be the start of the Göta Canal's emergence. Today, the city is one of the canal's biggest tourist destinations, where canal travelers from several parts of the country meet.

Motala is sometimes considered the capital of the Göta Canal and offers the best of Östergötland's nature and culture. Choose between scenic and pulse-raising activities such as cycling and hiking trails or why not a paddle trip on the canal. Motala also has a large range of outdoor activities, dining experiences and accommodation that suit many different visitors.
