Quick facts about Göta Canal 2.0
We are in the midst of the largest renovation work on Göta Canal since the inauguration in 1832. The work is called Göta Canal 2.0 and is a five-year project, where large parts of the canal is renovated and adapted to the current safety regulations for dams. Through the work, AB Göta kanalbolag is responsible for securing the cultural history building Göta Canal for future generations, thus continuing to be a motor for the growing visitor industry in Sweden.
Project time: 2016 - 2020
Investment: About 500 million SEK.
Financing: The owner, Swedish state
Why: To preserve Sweden's largest cultural heritage, secure the facility based on a dam safety perspective and create conditions for tourism along the Göta Canal.
Closed channel: No, Göta Canal will not be closed during the project. The work does not affect the boat traffic, and the fairway will be kept open as usual during the summer.
