Pedal at your own pace alongside the canal
One of the easiest ways to enjoy canal life is on two wheels. Ride along the old towpaths – a total of 87 km with no cars in sight. Watch the locks in action, pat the canal sheep or enjoy a picnic on the canal bank while the boats glide lazily by. We have many great cycling packages and accommodation alternatives.
The towpath
The car-free path along the Göta Canal is called the towpath – because when the canal was built, all boats were actually towed from the shore by oxen. The oxen were phased out as propellers became commonplace, but the name lived on.Today the old towpaths are a favourite of cyclists. They’re car-free (except for occasional maintenance vehicles), have hardly any hills, and also offer several rest areas where you can barbecue or just have a snack.
Come and try it for yourself!
