Motala, Mariestad

Locks 4 and 5 make up a unit together with Sjötorp 2 and 3. They are named after the four historic estates of the realm (townsmen, peasants, clergy and nobility).

The lockkeeper’s cottage was built of timber in 1858. Just downstream of the lock, the canal passes under a modern bascule bridge.

Formal names: Lock 4 was named Borgarna/The townsmen, while Lock 5 carries the name Bönderna/The peasantry.

Built: Both locks were built in 1819-1820.

Technical facts:  The double lock has a rise of 4.8 metres.
