Lyrestad Bridge

Motala, Mariestad

The bridgekeeper's cottage was built in timber in 1854. There is also a barn, piggery, wash-house and earth cellar. The barn is unique, not only because it is so well-preserved but also because of its age. It may be even older than the cottage.

The harbour storehouse dates from the time when Lyrestad was an important transhipping centre. It is said that it was built of demolition timber from the canal labourers' barracks at Norrkvarn. It was not unusual to re-use timber from the barracks, which were no longer required after the canal was completed.
