Forsvik old bridge

Motala, Karlsborg

The bridge at Forsvik is probably Sweden's oldest iron bridge. For many years, researchers had declared that the bridge had been imported from England. Although the canal company had certainly imported knowledge and techniques from Great Britain, especially when starting construction, the Forsvik bridge is of Swedish manufacture.

The bridge was built at Stafsjö. There are accounts, drawings and inspection certificates proving that the bridge was in fact manufactured in Sweden and not in England.

Built: 1813

Type: Double bascule bridge

Technical facts: This iron bridge is of  the double bascule type.  Nowadays, it is permanently raised, although it is operational after renovation in 1986.
