The highest land point on the canal is Lanthöjden, 91.5 metres above sea level. The canal used to make a wider turn to avoid rocky stretches, but at the beginning of the 1930s a straighter alignment was blasted past Lanthöjden, a 4.5 kilometre section of canal called Bergkanalen. On the island that was formed between the two channels is a stone obelisk marking the highest point on the canal. There is no leeway for large ships to meet in Bergkanalen, and there are signs designating meeting points.
