When the Domänverket was converted into an independent subsidiary company in 1992, the question of the canal company's future was dealt with. The Swedish parliament considered it was the business of the state to take responsibility for the future running and repair of the Göta Canal so that its value as a culturally-historical structure and a tourist attraction could be maintained. The state will continue to own the company in future where it, the canal property and the company's forests will continue to be a coherent unit. Financing of the canal's repair will be ensured by the government.
