Canal history

The Göta Canal is one of the largest construction projects ever undertaken in Sweden. The canal is 190 kilometres in length and contains 58 locks.

The Göta Canal stretches from Mem on an inlet of the Baltic near Söderköping, through Lake Vättern to Sjötorp on Lake Vänern. Together with the Trollhätte Canal, the Göta Canal forms a continuous waterway through Sweden from coast to coast.
