STF youth hostel in Forsvik - Göta Kanal

Forsvik, Karlsborg

The youth hostel in Forsvik - Göta Kanal - History

The water is the heart of Forsvik and has been since the Middle Ages - even "Arn the crusader" was using the power of the water. And it's been used for the flour mill and lumber millas well as for forging and blacksmith's work.

The surroundings of Forsvik invite you to walk around and just enjoy the place. We have lots of hiking trails nearby, which are marked and in good condition! You can rent a bicycle for a couple of hours or for a whole day.

The white boats on the canal are an adventure worth watching when they come to the locks. There are possibilities to go on a tour with one of them or with Forsvik's own paddlesteamer Erik Nordewall.

Our rooms

We have 12 double rooms, some with their own kitchen and/or toilet with shower. The rooms are quite spacious so many of them have an extra bunkbed and we can always provide extra beds.

The reception is located in the small coffee shop (Kafé Ada) in the old miller's residence during summer. There, a breakfast buffet is served from 8am-10am every day. Please let us know in advance if you need any special food.

During the rest of the day, you can enjoy icecream or have a delicious cake.

If you are a bit hungry, you will find sandwiches, sallads and hot dogs at Adas Kafé.

Rent the whole house

Gather your family, your class mates, or your best friends! Or just find a reason for a gathering. Rent the whole house and have it all to yourselves. Cook your own food or let us do the cooking. There is plenty of space for all of you.

The building of Forsvik's Hostel - known as "No 1"- was built in 1861 by Forsviks Works for its workers. The house is made of timber and is a type of barrack building very common to industrial centres of that time. After a careful and comprehensive renovation in 1995, the building was reborn as a hostel.

Forsvik is one of Sweden's oldest industrial environments with the present buildings and remains illustrating the development during the second half of 19th century.

Today, it is an industrial heritage site and part of the formal regional cultural heritage organisation with conservators and architects working with conserving, restoring and relating the history of  industrial heritage.

Forsvik's Hostel and the rest of Forsvik's works are listed buildings.
