Crayfish fishing for the whole family in the Göta canal

Lyrestad, Mariestad

Having a Crayfish party in late August or early September, has been a tradition in Sweden for many hundreds of years. Originally a delicacy only the upper classes enjoyed, by the 1800s the middle classes had discovered a taste for them, and nowadays almost all Swedes celebrate the end of the summer with a crayfish party, complete with hats & lanterns, snaps to drink and lots of silly songs to join in with. Some insist you have to serve freshwater crayfish, others saltwater. Both are delicious, boiled with fresh dill. And if you can fish your own crayfish for the party, so much the better!

Why not come and fish your own crayfish with us here at Norrqvarn by the Göta canal? It's an easy, child friendly activity. Traps are dropped into the water from the canal bank, so you don’t need a boat, just a wheelbarrow and torches. We’re sure the whole family will enjoy our crayfishing package!

After you've checked in we’ll meet up for a demonstration of what to do.

When the traps have been baited and left in the canal excitement mounts until finally when darkness falls and the moon comes out, it’s time to go and pull up the crayfish traps to see how big your haul is.

When you check out you’ll get a bottle of freshly cooked crayfish from the Göta canal to take home with you.

It's an exciting adventure for all ages!
