Göta Canal
Today, Göta Canal is one of Sweden’s most visited and appreciated destinations. Göta Canal stretches 191 kilometres from Sjötorp by Lake Vänern, north-east of Mariestad, to Mem on the Baltic Sea, just east of Söderköping. In the province of Västergötland, the canal joins Sweden’s two largest lakes Vänern and Vättern, starting in Sjötorp and finishing in Karlsborg.
The canal has 58 locks and runs through an ever-changing natural environment.

Hiking along Göta Canal

A hike along the canal is a serene experience. The slow pace allows you to enjoy the unique canal environment of boating, locks and street life. You will walk along the gravel towpath along the canal. Accommodation, eateries and interesting attractions are plentiful along the route.

Walking along the canal is an activity that can be enjoyed all year round. Here, you will encounter a fantastic natural environment and the towpath is free of cars.

During the peak season, the canal carries both pleasure boats and passenger boats, while the towpath is also used by a lot of cyclists.

From Töreboda
Töreboda is located where Göta Canal and Västra stambanan train line cross paths. There are many daily train stops from Göteborg, Stockholm, Skövde, Jönköping and Örebro.

If travelling by car from road E20 and Mariestad, it is only about 15 kilometres to Töreboda. In Töreboda, turn left after the fire station and follow Kungsgatan. Car parking is available along Kanalvägen (do not cross the canal bridge). Walk across the bridge to find your bike hire place and Glassbryggan icecream shop right by the bridge abutment.

From E20 Hova, it is about 20 kilometres to Töreboda. In Töreboda, drive across the canal bridge and turn right into Kanalvägen to park. Walk across the bridge to find your bike hire place and Glassbryggan icecream shop right by the bridge abutment.
