Brådtom Lock

Motala, Norrköping

Formal name: Stockholm.

Technical facts: The lock has a rise of 2.3 metres and just above it is a sluice for draining the section between Norsholm and Brådtom.

History of the lock
On 13 November 1904, the steamer "Mars" entered the lock at such a speed that it smashed into the lower lock gates. The upper gates were also destroyed and water cascaded through the lock. All traffic on this section of the canal was stopped for the rest of the season. According to the captain of "Mars", the disaster was due to a faulty engine-room telegraph.
